The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (GOCC) is a charitable foundation started in 1993 in order to raise funds for medical equipment for Polish hospitals. Every January, there is a „Grand Finale”, during which hundreds of volunteers collect money in the streets, there are concerts and other events, as well as online auctions. The Foundation uses the raised funds to purchase medical equipment saving the lives of newborns, of children injured in accidents, or for providing comprehensive elderly care. Last year’s finale raised a record amount of over PLN 72M (around NZD 24M). More information about the Foundation can be found on http://en.wosp.org.pl/
The 25th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (GOCC) took place on 15 January 2017. A few days before the main event we held a special film screening at the Lighthouse Cinema in Petone. We sold nearly all the tickets, and the guests had an opportunity not only to see a prerelease screening of “Lion”, nominated for the Academy Awards in six categories, but also taste some delicious Polish baking. On Sunday 15 January the Polish House came to life, because from 11am to 3pm it hosted the GOCC Grand Finale. We offered sweet and savoury Polish food, an auction with interesting prizes, a lottery for kids, a magician, activities for the youngest ones, a quiz about Poland, and live music. We raised early $4,000 (including the funds raised at the cinema event and donations received by our Auckland-based volunteer), and our headquarters were even mentioned on Polish TV. We would like to thank all the participants of the Finale, the donors, with a special thanks going to the Polish Association, which allowed us the use of the Polish House at no cost. This year’s Finale again raised a record amount in donations all over the world: over $21 million NZD.
