1st to 3rd November 75th Anniversary of the Pahiatua Polish Children

It’s our pleasure to present the national program of events to commemorate 75 years since the Polish Children’s arrival to New Zealand on 1 November 1944. The 75th reunion will be held in Wellington and Pahiatua during the first weekend of November, to coincide with the anniversary date.

Organised by the Pahiatua Polish Children’s children, families from near and far are warmly invited to share in the weekend activities and connect with the collective journey that binds them. The events will be an opportunity for old and new friends to catch up and share their stories; to remember, reflect and enjoy the special experience of being Polish in New Zealand.

Following is an outline of the program so you can plan any necessary travel or accommodation for this special event. The next communication will provide further information about the planned activities and costs, including registration information.

If you wish to attend this year’s commemorative events and you have not attended a past Pahiatua Polish Children reunion, you must register to receive the next communication. Please send your details to: pahiatuapolishchildren@gmail.com or simply message us.

Together with the township of Pahiatua, the 75th reunion committee look forward to hosting the Pahiatua Polish Children and their families to Wellington and Pahiatua this November.

75th Reunion of Polish Children
2nd to 3rd November 2019, Wellington, New Zealand

Nearly a year before the end of the Second World War a group of 733 Polish children and their 102 caregivers who had been displaced by the war, arrived in Wellington aboard the USS General Randall on 1 November, 1944. Their harrowing journey had begun with their arrest and deportation from Poland by the Russians, who forced them into deprivation in labour camps in Siberia and other parts of the Soviet Union. They were given refuge in Persia, and later offered a home in New Zealand. The children and their caregivers were settled into a camp prepared especially for them in the quiet country town which is forever associated with their arrival and lends their name to them: The
Pahiatua Polish Children.

To commemorate 75 years since the Polish Children’s arrival, a reunion will be held in Wellington during the first weekend of November, to coincide with the anniversary date. Organised by the Pahiatua Polish Childrens’ children, families from near and far are warmly invited to share in the weekend activities and connect with the collective journey that binds them. The events will be an opportunity for old and new friends to catch up and share their stories; to remember, reflect and enjoy the special experience of being Polish in New Zealand.

Details for this reunion programme, including the precise location in Wellington for some of the events, are currently being finalised. Please refer below to an outline of the tentative programme so you can plan any necessary travel or accommodation for this special event. The next communication will provide further information, including registration forms, costs, more about the planned activities and venue details.

Our aim in putting together this programme is to provide something that will appeal to all generations. The programme will incorporate Polish song, dance and cuisine as a tribute to the Polish Pahiatua children. We urge you to encourage and involve your extended family in this special weekend celebration.

PLEASE MARK THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR CALENDAR!

In our previous communication, we indicated that there would be a day trip to Pahiatua on Friday, 1 November for the unveiling of a Polish Children’s memorial. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, the memorial will not be ready on time, so the day trip is no longer being planned. However, we have been approached by a number of people from Auckland who are keen to still go ahead with a bus trip, so if you are interested, please contact us NOW – we need to know as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly (please see contact details
below).

We are still looking for people to join our reunion committee, to offer their time and skills to deliver a memorable reunion. If you can help in any way, please feel free to contact us.

Siedemdziesiąt lat temu 733 dzieci wraz z 102 opiekunami przybyło do Wellington okrętem General Randall.

pierwsze zawiadomienie o zjeździe, aby umożliwić uczestnikom wczesne zarezerwowanie terminu i poczynienie
wstępnych planów. Następny komunikat będzie zawierać więcej informacji, formularze rejestracyjne, koszty,
planowane wydarzenia i miejsca spotkań.

Wciąż szukamy ochotników do naszego komitetu, którzy będą mogli poświęcić czas i umiejętności, aby zapewnić
niezapomniane spotkanie. Chętnych do współpracy, w jakikolwiek sposób, prosimy skontaktować się z nami.

W przypadku jakichkolwiek pytań prosimy o kontakt:
